TEAM OPPORTUNITIES
A chance to contribute!
The 4th Annual Viking Boat Races & Festival provides individuals, businesses, and organizations with an opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled weekend, while making a valuable contribution to the community. You can support the Bayside Rowing Club’s Inner-city Kids Program.
Another valuable benefit of the race is the intense teamwork required to be successful. While the primary focus of the day is the Viking Boat racing, the Races will also include 4 days of excitement, fun and magic aimed to make every member of the family smile. Just to name a few: The Canadian Wife Carrying Championships, the World Swedish Meatball Eating Championship, Tug of War, Milk and Cookie Eating Contest, Lumberjack Show, Kidz Zone, Live Entertainment, Taste of Scandinavia Pavilion and much more!
The non-competitive aspect of the event makes it suitable and enjoyable for teams of all skill levels. Many participants have never picked up an oar before they begin the pre-event practice sessions.
STEP ONE – The Idea
STEP TWO – Filling the Boat
STEP THREE – Defining Roles
STEP FOUR – Registration
STEP ONE...
Everything begins with an idea.
If you think that rowing in a Viking Boat on Toronto’s Waterfront sounds like a good way to spend a fun day outdoors in June, then you are right!
The trick is to convince other people that you are right too.
When you begin to talk to your co-workers, neighbours, and family about joining your team, please stress to them that the purpose is to have FUN working as a team and to support some excellent causes.
STEP TWO...
Filling the boat -- Start your recruitment today! Download the promotional poster and post it around your office.
Filling a boat requires 18 people to row and one coxie to steer the boat. If you need help in recruiting your coxie, please contact the Festival office for assistance.
SPECIAL NOTES...
A person may be a member of, and race for, only ONE team!
Should you have difficulty finding enough rowers for your team, DON'T DESPAIR! Let us know at the Festival Office, and we will do our best to help you find those extra bodies that you need!
Likewise, if you want to row -- but don't have a team -- let us know, and we will be your MATCHMAKER!
STEP THREE...
Before you register your team, you have two (2) mandatory roles to fill:
Team Captain
Team Co-Captain
We recommend that you assign these roles to different individuals to help in the success of your team, although one person could fill two roles if necessary. These people will have to be named on your
TEAM CAPTAIN
Responsible for the team as a whole, the Team Captain is responsible for:
- Conveying all pertinent information to the team (practice times, race times, conduct of team, etc.)
- Liaison between the Race Office and the team
Other information updates will be faxed or emailed during the weeks leading up to the event.
TEAM CO-CAPTAIN...
Assisting the Captain in fulfilling his/her role, the Co-Captain stands in for the Captain whenever he/she is unavailable
